Aftercare

Most individuals will attest to the fact that the first few weeks and months, even up to a year can be the most trying time for a newly sober drug addict or alcoholic.  While inpatient and outpatient treatment create a great foundation in sobriety, sometimes more is better.  If the individual was not sure about sobriety to begin with, he or she may begin to have second thoughts about staying sober or forget why he or she became sober to begin with.  These are very dangerous thoughts and are even more dangerous when individuals are not talking about their fears or desires.  The rehabilitation process from drugs or alcohol can be very powerful and have a great effect on individuals that go through the process, but sometimes it can leave them feeling like they are on top of the world and untouchable when it comes to their sobriety.  This is one of the biggest pitfalls and relapse triggers around.

Many people adhere to the belief that it is important to “remember where you came from” and continue to give in sobriety to keep staying sober.  Participating in a 12-step program, church group, non-affiliated group or aftercare program can be the perfect combination with an inpatient program that keeps individuals staying sober in the long-term.  Aftercare for substance abuse is a very popular option because it is less intense, more affordable and can be incorporated into daily life with hardly any problem.  This service allows newly sober participants to continue therapy and counseling both on an individual and group level and relearn lessons that help prevent relapse.
